S/V Sabado Code License & Terms of Use
Covering all code, scripts, dashboards, and configuration files distributed through svsabado.com, whether through membership or released free to the public.
1. What this covers
We release software in two very different ways, and the terms are not the same for both.
Member Code. Software provided to members of svsabado.com, including but not limited to Home Assistant dashboard cards, ESPHome configurations, integrations, automation scripts, and any other code files made available through the Documents Library or member downloads (collectively, "the Code"). Sections 2 through 8 apply to this.
Freely distributed tools. Some things we build are given away to everyone, free, with no membership and no account, and we actively want them copied and shared. These are covered by Section 9 instead. Nothing in Sections 2 through 8 restricts them.
If you are not sure which category something falls into, ask us. If we handed it to you at a public link with no login, it is a freely distributed tool.
2. Grant of license
As a paying member of svsabado.com, you are granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to:
- Use the Code on your own vessel(s) or personal property
- Modify the Code for your own use
- Adapt the Code to fit your own systems and configuration
3. Restrictions
You may not:
- Redistribute, resell, sublicense, or share the Code (in original or modified form) outside of svsabado.com membership
- Publish the Code publicly (e.g., in a public GitHub repo, forum post, or file-sharing site) without prior written permission
- Use the Code as part of a commercial product or paid service offered to others
- Remove or alter the copyright and license notice included in the Code
If you'd like to share your modifications with the broader community, reach out. We're generally happy to work something out, we just want to know about it first.
4. Attribution
If you showcase, screen-record, or otherwise publicly display the Code or dashboards built from it (e.g., in a YouTube video, blog post, or forum), please credit S/V Sabado and link back to https://www.svsabado.com.
5. No warranty
The Code is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement.
Some of this Code interacts with vessel systems that affect safety, including but not limited to generator monitoring, battery/electrical systems, anchor watch alarms, and smoke/CO2/bilge detection. This Code is not a certified safety system and must not be relied upon as your sole means of monitoring critical vessel systems. You are solely responsible for testing, validating, and maintaining any systems you build using this Code, and for maintaining independent, certified safety equipment aboard your vessel.
6. Limitation of liability
In no event shall Ray Hendricks, Holly Hendricks, or S/V Sabado be liable for any damages whatsoever, including but not limited to loss of property, loss of data, personal injury, or loss of life, arising from the use, misuse, or inability to use the Code, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
7. Termination
This license is tied to active svsabado.com membership. If your membership lapses or is terminated, your license to use newly released Code ends, though you may continue using versions already downloaded during active membership for your own vessel.
This section applies to Member Code only. It does not apply to anything in Section 9.
8. Questions and permissions
Want to publish something, share a modification, or use the Code in a way these terms don't cover? Reach out through https://www.svsabado.com. We're easy to talk to, and the answer is usually yes.
9. Freely distributed tools
Some things we build are not member content at all. We give them away to anyone, and we want them spread as widely as possible. These are covered by this section instead of Sections 2 through 8.
Currently in this category:
- Overboard, the offline emergency guide for small vessels, at https://emergency.svsabado.com
These tools are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
You are free to:
- Share it. Copy it and pass it on by any means, to anyone. Host your own copy. Put it on a USB stick. Hand it out at the marina. Load it on every boat in your charter fleet or your sailing school.
- Adapt it. Change it, translate it, add to it, and share your version.
Under these terms:
- Attribution. Keep the credit to S/V Sabado and the link back to https://www.svsabado.com. If you changed something, say so, so nobody blames us for your edits.
- NonCommercial. You may not sell it, charge for access to it, put it behind a paywall, or bundle it into something people pay for.
- ShareAlike. If you change it and share your version, your version has to carry these same terms.
To be clear about where the line sits, because this is where people get confused: using these tools aboard your own boat, or handing them to other sailors, is never a commercial use, even if you run a business. Charging people for the tool itself, or for access to it, is.
There is no membership requirement, no account, and no expiration. If your membership lapses, or you never had one, your right to use and share these tools is unaffected.
Safety and no warranty. Sections 5 and 6 apply in full to these tools as well. Overboard in particular is not medical advice, is not a certified safety system, and does not replace training, proper distress equipment, or professional medical and rescue services. It is a set of checklists meant to keep a rattled person moving in the right order until real help is reached. You use it at your own risk, and you remain responsible for carrying and maintaining independent, certified safety equipment aboard your vessel.
10. Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated from time to time. The current version will always be posted at https://www.svsabado.com/license. Continued use of the Code after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
Changes to Section 9 will never be applied retroactively. A tool released under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 stays available under those terms for the version you received, permanently. That is how the license works, and we would not want it any other way.
Questions about licensing, permissions, or wanting to share something publicly? Reach out via S/V Sabado . We're easy to talk to.
