Sabado NMEA Wiring Diagram For the most part, the NMEA network on Sabado is how she came from the factory. We are sharing it here to show how we've integrated our monitoring systems into what was existing. This type of integration should be an option regardless of the brand of navigation equipment installed as long as they are networked with NMEA equipment. You may need to invest in one of the adapters/converters that are readily available on the market if your system uses proprietary connections or communication protocols. We have several ways that we can pull data into our custom monitoring systems. Firstly, because we've integrated the B&G systems into our computer network, we can use either Ethernet or WiFi to collect and monitor the NMEA data. When the navigation system is powered up, we pull data from both the Yacht Device Ethernet gateway and the B&G Zeus multi function device (MFD). These systems each forward data that the other doesn't. Yes, you would think there would be better standards but there isn't. When the navigation system is powered down, we still pull GPS, AIS, and speed from the Vesper Cortex WiFi. This allows us to maintain a robust anchor watch alarm system without the need to keep the entire system powered up. Some notable additions that we've made to the NMEA device list includes the yacht device engine gateways that add all of our engine data to the system and the Victron Cerbo GX that adds all of the electrical and tank level data. You'll also see that we've added a fully independent backup autopilot to the equipment list. This system is not connected to the main NMEA network. Instead, the backup system maintains its own "private" NMEA network that operates independent of the main network. This is done mainly for protection against electrical surges such as those from nearby lightning strikes. Finally, we have three independent sources of GPS data that is connected to the network at all times as well as two sources of GPS data that we keep unplugged as backups. Overkill? Maybe, but we like redundancy. |

Sabado Ethernet Network Overview This is a high level overview of the Ethernet network on Sabado. Detailed descriptions of the major components will be added when they become available. The network on Sabado is a mix of Ethernet, WiFi, and Bluetooth. This network serves as a hub for communications, a bridge between the NMEA network and the monitoring/reporting systems, and for establishing local and remote controls of certain onboard systems. We have three ways to connect to the internet, our main connection is through Starlink, and backup connections are through LTE an Wifi. Our Teltonika router serves as a load balancer, firewall, WiFi switch, and VPN server. As currently configured, all traffic entering and leaving our network does so through a VPN and can seamlessly traverse any of the connected internet sources. The VPN connection allows remote connectivity while off Sabado to allow monitoring. There are two main servers on Sabado both running Debian. The first is a Raspberry Pi that serves SignalK, Influx, and Grafana. This server provides the backbone of our monitoring and recording. The second server is a AMD based NUC computer that drives the navdesk touchscreen, and provides all of our data display, media storage, and a host of docker containers. Each of the two servers will be detailed in separate documents. Other devices attached to this network include the Spectra watermaker (allows control and monitoring), Victron Cerbo GX (places all of our energy, temperature, and tank data on the network), Yacht Device Ethernet Gateway (places all of the NMEA data onto Ethernet), the Vesper Cortex (places VHF/AIS control and monitoring on the network), and the B&G system (places the Zeus and Radar on the network). The network on Sabado is designed to be robust with several redundant ways of obtaining Internet connectivity, NMEA data, and remote monitoring and control paths. Additionally, 100% of this system runs on 12 volts and consumes very little power. Without Starlink powered up, consumption is 48 watts with Starlink adding an additional 50 watts. |
